Ensuring Academic Success

Ultimately, our barometer for judging the success of the Chesapeake College Athletic Program isn't wins and losses – it's in the academic achievement of our student athletes. The college is extremely proud of the fact that six of our student athletes have been named to the National Junior College Athletic Association Academic All-American squad since 2004, and that we annually place several students on the All-Region XX Academic Team.

Our vision is that each and every Chesapeake College student athlete will achieve his or her academic and career goals. To that end, Chesapeake College student athletes have access to an Academic Support Center (http://www.chesapeake.edu/asc/) whose major goal is student success. The Academic Support Center features both drop-in assistance and scheduled tutoring. In addition, supplemental instruction is offered in courses that have a historically high rate of non-success.

Chesapeake College student athletes are also part of an Academic Early Warning System, which attempts to identify as early as possible students who are struggling to find academic success, and then connects those students with the appropriate support services. Student athletes also take part in sport-specific study halls so that our student athletes have structured study time built into their schedules.

Finally, every first-semester student athlete is required to take the college's Freshman Seminar Course (FSC 101). This course assists students in learning to be successful college students, with course topics including time management, note-taking skills, test-taking skills, effective written and oral communication, and basic technological competencies.

As important, we have an Athletic Department Staff that emphasizes academic success. In addition to being a former Region XX and Northeast District Baseball Coach of the Year, Athletic Director Frank Szymanski is a master's-degree-prepared educator who also holds Counselor rank at the college. Dr. Ed Baker – a former men's basketball coach who is in the college's Athletic Hall of Fame as well as its longest-serving faculty member – not only teaches Wellness for Life and Weight Training courses, he serves as a valued academic advisor for our student athletes.

Everyone at Chesapeake College takes pride in our athletic successes, such as our recent Region XX championships in baseball (2005), men's basketball (2008), and women's softball (2009), as well as our 2010 state title in women's softball. We take the most pride, however, in the academic success of our student athletes – so come prepared to learn at an institution committed to your future.

Sincerely,
Office of Student Success and Enrollment Management
