Cecil's Season Ends in Region 20 Semifinals

FREDERICK, Md. - Cecil men's basketball fell just short in their Region 20 Division II semifinal game, dropping an 88-83 contest to No. 2 Chesapeake.

Down 12 after the first half, the Seahawks would battle all the way back to tie the game at 73-73 with 7:20 left to play. Both squads traded blows over the next six minutes until Jordan Strickland's jumper planted Cecil within a point of the lead.

Strickland would commit a foul with a minute to play and Chesapeake knocked down both attempts. Cecil missed their next shot down the floor, but a steal by Kevin Neal led to a quick dunk from Vernon Simmons to cut the deficit back down to one. With just 19 seconds remaining, the Seahawks were forced to foul Chesapeake in order to stop the clock. The Skipjacks buried two more free throws, growing its lead back to three.

After a timeout from Chesapeake, Cecil brought the ball up the court and attempted to set up its offense. The Skipjacks had other plans, forcing a turnover from Neal with 11 seconds to go. Another foul eventually led to two made free throws for Chesapeake and an 88-83 lead. Another miss from downtown and a blocked layup sounded the buzzer on the Seahawks season.

Cecil closes out their 2022-23 campaign with a 20-12 record.
