Skipjacks Back In Win Column After 66-57 Victory Over Westchester

The Chesapeake College men's basketball team bounced back after a two-game skid, defeating visiting Westchester Community College, 66-57, in Skipjack Arena on Saturday afternoon, December 16th.

Scoring was hard to come by in the first half as the Skipjacks managed just 27 points, but were able to hold Westchester's Vikings to a lowly 16 at the break, half of which came from free throws. Westchester made only 4 baskets over the first 20 minutes while shooting 15% from the floor, 4-for-26, including 0-for-11 from deep. Chesapeake on the other hand, was 11 of 29 (38%), which was enough to build up an 11-point lead at halftime. The Skipjacks were led by Armani Martin and Kyle Jones with 8 points apiece. Jones was also already nearing a double-double with 7 boards as well.

Westchester was able to flip the script in the second half and putting together a 25-9 run over nearly ten minutes to open the half which resulted in the Vikings taking a 41-38 lead over the Skipjacks. Chesapeake responded with a 7-0 stretch to regain the lead which they never lost down the stretch, earning the 66-57 win to improve to 4-8 on the season.

Martin finished as the game's leading scorer with 23 points while Jones finished second with 16, just missing out on a double-double with 8 boards. Marquis McAbee added 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists as well to round out the Skipjacks leading scorers. Chesapeake returns for one last time in 2023 for a 7 PM matchup against Virginia Peninsula Community College on Tuesday, December 19th in Skipjack Arena before nearly three weeks off surrounding the winter break.
