'Jacks blank Cecil College on DeConti goal

WYE MILLS – Will DeConti scored an unassisted goal midway through the second half Tuesday afternoon as Chesapeake College blanked Cecil College, 1-0, to get the Skipjacks' men's soccer home schedule off to a successful start.

Chesapeake head coach Mike Morse said the Skipjacks (1-1 overall, 1-1 Maryland JuCo) had plenty of opportunities to break the game open, but failed to convert.

"We had some problems finishing," said Morse after his squad dropped Cecil to 0-3, 0-2.

DeConti had no problem finishing his scoring opportunity midway through the second half.  He took a loose ball, got past one Cecil defender, and scored from about six yards out to give the Skipjacks the win.

"We had pressure on the ball and were banging it around in the box when Will came up with the ball," said Morse of the scoring play.

Chesapeake goalie Luke Blevins made five saves to earn the shutout.

Morse praised his defensive backfield of Austin Long, DeConti, Chris Gleockler, and Brenden Langford for their efforts against Cecil along with the play of midfielders Shayne Ray and Ian "Bubba" Miller.

"Our back four played pretty solid and our midfielders also played well," said Morse.

The Skipjacks were coming off a 4-0 loss to Frederick.

"Frederick was a good side – more skillful and faster," said Morse.  "Today we played with a little bit more confidence and were a little steadier at midfield.  It's starting to come together."

Frederick 4, Chesapeake 0

FREDERICK – Manuel Mejicanos scored two goals and assisted on another last Thursday afternoon as the Cougars blanked Chesapeake in the Skipjacks' season opener.

Mejicanos scored a pair of first-half goals 20 minutes apart to help the Cougars to a 3-0 halftime lead.  He then set up a goal by Lorenzo Bolanos 15 minutes into the second half to complete the scoring.

Chandler Cole's goal off a Bolanos through ball started the scoring at the 10-minute mark.  Mejicanos added his first goal just three minutes later with a shot inside the far post and finished off the first-half scoring by tallying off a free kick.

"The second half was much better for us," said Chesapeake head coach Mike Morse.

Frederick had a 26-4 advantage in shots and a 13-2 edge in corners. Chesapeake goalie Luke Blevins had seven saves in a losing effort.
