Streaking Chesapeake blanks Pioneers twice

WYE MILLS – Chesapeake College's pitching trio put together two more shutouts – including a two-hitter by Rachael Milligan in the nightcap – Monday afternoon as the Skipjacks swept visiting Anne Arundel Community College, 5-0 and 4-0.

Kara Wood allowed one hit with four strikeouts and no walks in 2 2/3 innings in the opener before reinjuring her back.  Chloe Day then provided 4 1/3 innings of perfect relief, retiring 13 straight batters while striking out six.

"She came right on and did her job," Chesapeake head coach Durrie Hayes said of Day.  "They [Wood and Day] were both throwing the ball nice.  No walks, one hit – you're going to win a lot of games with that type of pitching."

Milligan was just as sharp in the nightcap, whiffing 14 and walking none.

"Rachael was pretty much on," said Hayes, whose squad has won 15 straight games.  "She was getting ahead in the count, throwing the ball hard and hitting spots."

Abby Nelson (three RBI, stolen base), Cat Ramagnano (RBI, double), Kristen Shank (double), and Kristen Catlin each had two hits for Chesapeake (18-3 overall, 8-0 league) in the opener.  The Skipjacks scored two in the third, highlighted by Brittney Platt's suicide squeeze, and added a fourth-inning run on Ramagnano's RBI double.  Nelson singled in the final two runs in the sixth.

Platt staked the Skipjacks to a 1-0 lead in the nightcap with a two-out, RBI single in the first.  Courtney Stubbs added a run-scoring single in the second to make it 2-0, and the Skipjacks added two more runs in the third via wild pitches.

Caroline Clarry went 2-for-3 and scored a run for the Skipjacks in Game 2.

The Skipjacks continued to play without shortstop Jenna Willey (knee injury) and second baseman Tori Hughes (hand injury) while beginning a stretch of 18 games in 14 days.

"We want to keep plugging along and getting a little better every day," said Hayes.
