Skipjacks return to form against CCBC-Dundalk

WYE MILLS – Chesapeake College's women's basketball team lost two tournament games in Baltimore last weekend. The Skipjacks returned to conference play against CCBC-Dundalk Tuesday night and head coach Gwen Barnes was ready with lessons learned from the weekend.

"We need to move more on offense and take good shots," Barnes said before the game. "Our strategy for tonight is team ball. That is what I stress constantly."

That strategy worked well Tuesday night as the Skipjacks (7-4 overall, 5-1 conference) took control early on the way to a 91-48 victory.  Chesapeake put together an 8-0 run highlighted by two field goals from Deondria Wimber (17 points, two assists) on the way to an 18-8 lead at the quarter break.  The first quarter ended with a field goal at the buzzer by Maya Robinson (seven points, five assists).

Janice Ladson (team-high 19 points, eight assists) took over offensively in the second quarter while Chandni Taylor (seven rebounds) led the defensive charge with three steals in the period as Chesapeake built a commanding, 36-23 halftime lead.

The second half was all Chesapeake as the Skipjacks outscored the Lions, 55-25, including a 33-point outburst in the third quarter.

Emily Truitt (16 points, five rebounds) and Chantelle Gross (14 points, six assists, four rebounds) joined Ladson and Wimber in double figures for Chesapeake.  Natori Nesbit and Kristian Saunders each had seven rebounds to tie Taylor for team-high in boards.

Reeva Jackson added seven points and Cherise Castello had six points.

Ayosunmomi Olorunsola (18 points, nine rebounds) and Destiny Owens (15 points, 13 rebounds) led the Lions (2-4, 1-2).

The Skipjacks will visit Montgomery College (9-2, 3-1) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in a key, early season conference matchup.
