Women’s Basketball Stays Perfect On The Season With Win Over Montgomery

Chesapeake College's women's basketball continued their hot start to the season with a home victory over Montgomery College Friday evening, November 22nd. The Skipjacks improved to 6-0 on the season, including 2-0 in Maryland JUCO play while handing Montgomery their first loss of the season to drop the Raptors to 5-1 on the season and 0-1 in MD JUCO.
Chesapeake picked up right where they had left off after their dominant home win over NOVA just three days prior, holding the Raptors to only 6 points in the first period en route to a 10 point first period lead, 16-6. The Skipjacks again outscored the Raptors in the second period with 20 points from Chesapeake against just 14 for Montgomery. Sophomore Brooke Worrell added 7 straight points for the Skipjacks during the period to lead Chesapeake in scoring at the break with 13 points to help head into halftime with a convincing 36-20 lead.
Both squads traded baskets back and forth throughout the third period and is also when sophomore guard Jahnaya Peterson began to catch fire. Peterson poured in 30 points in the second half alone, including a perfect 3 for 3 from beyond the arc in the final period. Her second half performance was nearly enough to outscore the entire Montgomery team in the final two periods who produced 31 points. Behind Peterson's strong performance, the Skipjacks continued to build upon their lead which was the largest at the 5 minute mark at 38 points. Chesapeake again never trailed for the entirety of the contest, their second game in a row they've been able to accomplish the tough feat in the 89-51 victory.
Peterson finished with 35 points to go along with 6 rebounds in her highest scoring output since joining the Skipjacks. Three other Skipjacks finished in double digit scoring in the contest. Despite the strong outing, Chesapeake continued to struggle from the free throw line, connecting on just 13 of their 31 attempts from the charity stripe. Head Coach Gwen Barnes will look to improve upon those numbers as the season progresses. The Skipjacks will have plenty of time over the break to work on their shooting before heading to Bel Air, Maryland next week to take on Nassau Community College on Friday, November 29th.
