Skipjacks Dominate in Home Opener

Playing in their first home game of the 2019-20 season, Chesapeake College's women's basketball did not disappoint in their return to Kilgus Court with a 101-29 rout of visiting NOVA. The Skipjacks (5-0, 1-0) held the Nighthawks (0-5, 0-0) under ten points in each of the final three periods while pouring in over 100 points for the first time since the 2018-19 season when they recorded 118 points in a win over Allegany College. The Skipjacks have been no strangers to high scoring affairs this season, but their stout defense which allowed only 29 points marked a new season best for Chesapeake.

At the end of the first period, NOVA trailed by only seven points with the score 18-11. Chesapeake head coach Gwen Barnes then made some adjustments at the break and the Skipjacks ran away with the remainder of the game, outscoring the Nighthawks 83-18 over the final 30 minutes of play in the Region XX matchup. The Skipjacks were firing on all cylinders with all nine girls who suited up for play scoring at least 5 points in the blowout win which saw them lead for the entirety of the game. Sophomore guard Brooke Worrell led the scoring for Chesapeake with 24 points while also adding 9 rebounds and 7 assists.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Skipjacks forced NOVA to take tough shots resulting in a 22 percent success rate from the floor for the Nighthawks. With active hands on defense, Chesapeake forced the Nighthawks to turn the ball over a whopping 39 times which they were able to turn into 50 points in transition. The Skipjacks will look to remain hot when conference and divisional opponent Montgomery visits Wye Mills to kick off Maryland JUCO play. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 pm.
