Women’s Basketball Picks Up First Win in Home Opener vs. Lackawanna

The Chesapeake College women's basketball team welcomed Lackawanna College to Skipjack Arena on Saturday afternoon, November 11th for the Skipjacks home opener where Chesapeake escaped with an 80-76 victory in a back-and-forth battle.

Both teams were constantly trading baskets but Chesapeake managed to hold a slim margin over the visiting Falcons, outscoring them in all but one quarter which Lackawanna managed to win by one point (17-18). Skipjacks head coach Gwen Barnes had her team in front 38-34 at the break behind scoring from 9 different Chesapeake players. Da'Myni Johnson led the Skipjacks in scoring at the break with 7 points while Ayanni Brown and Aniya Jones were right behind with 6 each. Brown had also collected 6 rebounds and dished out 3 assists by halftime as well.

The Skipjacks managed to further distance themselves from the Falcons following the break as they grew their lead to as many as 10 points at the 5:49 mark in the third period and head into the final frame with a 59-54 lead. Chesapeake was up by 9 with 6:37 remaining when Lackawanna put together a 13-1 run to take their largest lead of the game (3 points) with 4 minutes left to go. A clutch three from Johnson put the Skipjacks back in control, 74-72, at the 2:36 mark and Chesapeake managed to hold on down the stretch as they secured the 80-76 victory in their first game at home this year.

Johnson finished as the game's leading scorer with 22 points while adding 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Bryah Henry added 18 points, 8 rebounds off the bench while Brown nearly picked up a triple-double with 10 points, 11 boards, and 9 assists.

A slow game at times with frequent interruptions due to the number of fouls called, which reached 57 by the final whistle, the Skipjacks picked up some momentum before heading into their next matchup at Allegheny County (PA) on Tuesday, November 14th.
