Owls Come Up Just Short In Game Two vs. Chesapeake, Split The Day Against Skipjacks

Following the Owls sweep of Frederick Community College on Saturday, Prince George's quickly turned around to host Chesapeake College on Sunday, April 25th for another doubleheader. The Skipjacks entered as one of the Region's top Division II teams and amid a 6-game winning streak, as well as a near perfect 9-1 away record on the year. The Owls entered with some momentum of their own as they were fresh off a sweep of Division II Frederick. The pair of wins marked the Owls first win at home since March 10th, 2020 in a 7-2 win over Anne Arundel Community College during a single 9-inning game.

Game one featured a thrilling 7-6 Owls victory in which Prince George's put up five runs in the second inning alone, three of which came from a Peyton Harmon homerun just a day after his walk-off single gave the Owls the 8-7 win over Frederick in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. The Skipjacks forced the Owls to respond after putting up four runs of their own in the top of the fourth to cut into the lead, 5-4. Sophomore pitcher Logan Marx remained resilient as he pitched two scoreless innings while the Owls put up two more runs off a Trey Newland single deep into center field, allowing Wynston Dyer to cross the plate easily while teammate Patrick Hely turned on the jets to slide across the plate just before the throw.

Chesapeake wouldn't make it comfortable for the Owls as they scored two runs in the top of the seventh to cut to within one before Dyer made a play on a flyout into foul territory, sealing the 7-6 victory for Prince George's. Logan Marx again pitched the entire game, the third such time he's thrown a complete game all of which have resulted in wins for the Owls.

Game two started off as revenge for Chesapeake as they quickly rattled off six runs in the first inning, five of which came off of homeruns to include three solo homers as well. Fighting from behind the remainder of the contest, Prince George's made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh as they put up three runs to cut into the Skipjacks lead, 10-9. With Manelson Blanco the tying run on second and leadoff hitter Trey Newland stepping up to the plate, it looked like we were expecting to at least enter extra innings on the day. That's when Newland drove the ball into deep center field and continued to carry towards the fence before running out of steam and allowing Chesapeake's center fielder to make the final out at the warning track. The final out handed the Owls a narrow 10-9 loss.

With the split the Skipjacks improved to 20-6, 16-3 MD JUCO while the Owls improved to 6-10, 6-10 MD JUCO. The Owls have a few days of rest before they head to Cecil College on Saturday, May 1st to take on the Seahawks for a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to begin at noon.
